Professor Laureline Chiapello presented her video game CLTRS, focusing on female pleasure, and won an award in the “Making & Doing” category at the EASST-4S conference. This STS (science and technology studies) Conference, held in Amsterdam in July 2024, is dedicated to the study of the social, cultural, and political aspects of science, technology, and medicine.
The “Making & Doing” category is an initiative that highlights forms of research and engagement that go beyond traditional academic presentations. It provides a platform for interactive, creative, and practical projects that illustrate the theories and concepts of science and technology studies (STS) in tangible and original ways.
With over 3,000 participants, the Conference was an exceptional showcase for this research project, funded by a research-creation grant for new professors from the Fonds de recherche du Québec (FRQ). The project was carried out in collaboration with students and professors from the Université de Montréal’s Faculty of Music, UQAC’s Department of Computer Science and Mathematics, the NAD-UQAC School, as well as mentors from the video game industry.
Professor Chiapello also presented her design research in the panel “Exploring the Tools and Uses of Prototyping: Investigating How Knowing by Doing Takes Shape” on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, with a paper entitled “A Prototype, Which Prototype? Exploring Tensions in Using Digital Prototyping Tools in Video Game Projects.”
