Crises and Transformations in Quebec’s Music Ecosystem: A Series of Seven Study Days

From September to December 2026, CREAT Discoverability Axis will contribute to a series of seven study days devoted to the crises and transformations reshaping Quebec’s music ecosystem. Free and open to all, these study days will bring together researchers and members of the music community at several Montreal universities.

Seven Events, Seven Perspectives
Since the 1960s, Quebec’s music ecosystem has experienced a succession of multidimensional crises: the departure of multinational record companies (1970), the digital crisis (2000), the rise of digital platforms (2016), and the emergence of generative artificial intelligence. These transformations raise technological, economic, cultural, and social issues, yet they have received little comprehensive study in Quebec.

Held every two weeks throughout the fall term, the study days will explore the following themes: socioeconomic history, politics and music; artistic labour; musical diversity; music industry; streaming and discoverability; artificial intelligence.

Free Events at Multiple Venues
The study days will take place at INRS, UQAM, ÉTS, and Université de Montréal.

Participants may attend the events of their choice.

Master’s and doctoral students may register for INRS course POP8441 through the Bureau de coopération interuniversitaire.

Undergraduate may also be possible, following a discussion with professor, Romuald Jamet.
