What influences our music choices?

Why do we discover some music rather than others? Language, personal preferences, social circles and listening contexts all help shape our choices. A study published by Québec’s French Language Commissioner explores these influences, along with the role of recommendation systems.

Romuald Jamet (INRS), a CREAT co-researcher, provided scientific advice for the study, “Déterminants de la consommation musicale : recension des écrits et cadre d’analyse”, published on October 13, 2026.

Conducted under the direction of Benoît Dubreuil, French Language Commissioner, the review was researched, analyzed and written by Rodolphe Parent.

By examining the individual, social and contextual factors that shape music listening, the document offers a framework for better understanding the place of French in listening habits in Québec. It also invites reflection on ways to support the discoverability and circulation of music from Québec and the French-speaking world.
