Québec Music: Understanding listening contexts
Why does Québec music struggle to find a place in certain listening habits? In an opinion piece published on October 16 in Le Devoir, Romuald Jamet, a co-researcher with the CREAT Research Chair, looks beyond algorithms to examine the role of listening contexts.
Enjoying a song does not necessarily mean wanting to listen to it during every activity. In his analysis, the emphasis on lyrics, encouraged by cultural and language policies, can sometimes clash with the use of music as background sound.
Romuald Jamet therefore calls for support for a diverse range of Québec music and better documentation of listening practices. This reflection builds on the CREAT Research Chair’s Discoverability research area, which explores how works reach and connect with their audiences.
