The Culture in the Regions Axis has initiated a collective reflection on the very concept of regional culture. Several questions have already emerged: What does regional culture mean? What does the combination of the terms “culture,” “in,” and “region” represent, and how does this meaning evolve across different regional contexts? What defines a regional cultural production? If a cultural work is produced in a major urban center and presented in the regions, can it still be considered part of regional culture? Is culture the same across all regions of Quebec?
Building on these initial reflections, the Axis organized a citizen consultation workshop as part of the 29th edition of the Journées de la culture, in collaboration with Culture pour tous!, held in various regions across Quebec. This workshop marked the first concrete step in the process. A literature review on the topic was also conducted.
Among the planned activities is a mini-series of lunchtime talks scheduled to take place from February to April 2026. In addition, two study days will be held in May 2026, accompanied by a scientific poster competition for students, focused on a theme related to the concept of regional culture.
These activities aim to foster collective reflection and strengthen connections between cultural practitioners, researchers, and citizens.
